NBC 2020 Firestop Requirements - Interior Finishing

Joints Within and Between Fire Rated Walls/Floors

  • Joint firestop systems in all joints (static or dynamic) must now have been tested to fire test method CAN/ULC-S115. Available tested systems are found in UL and Intertek listings.

  • The published FT rating of the joint firestop system must be equal to the required fire rating of the assembly with the joint.

  • The selected joint firestopping system must accommodate potential joint movement (system listing will report maximum joint compression and extension).

Curtain Wall Edge-of-Slab Joints

  • The joint firestop system at the edge-of-slab (curtain wall joint) must now have been tested to fire test method ASTM E2307. Available tested systems are found in UL and Intertek listings.

  • The published F rating of the perimeter joint firestop system must be equal to the required fire rating of the floor assembly.

  • Any Engineering Judgment offered when a matching tested and listed system is unavailable should always detail the specific curtain wall construction, since E2307 fire test performance is heavily dependent on the construction details of the curtain wall.
